Chapter 3: Road Trip!

Moms need to play too – to keep our sense of wonder alive for our children. More than just exercise, it’s exploration, possibility and self-reliance we crave. It’s not the task of childrearing that can grind you down, but the repetition and the pace at which it happens. Technology has ratcheted things up to such a constant frenzy that others’ needs can always find you, demanding your immediate attention. The requests are endless. Multitasking becomes your Superpower. It’s sort of fun. Until you snap.

When I feel a snap coming on, I hit the open road. I forgive myself the guilty pleasure of stepping away for the day while repeating the “stewardess monologue:”

“In the event of a loss of altitude, please place the oxygen mask over your face before assisting small children and the elderly.”

I’d heard it hundreds of times, but truly understood only after becoming a mother. You can’t help anyone if you’re dead – emotionally or spiritually. It turns out road trips are exactly what Delta Airlines has been advising for years….
